Ontario Municipal Elections Act - Contribution Rules

Who Can Contribute?

  • Only individuals who normally reside in Ontario.  

  • Corporations, businesses, trade unions, neighbourhood associations, clubs, professional associations, and other organizations are not permitted to contribute. Members of these organizations may make personal contributions as individuals.

Contribution Limits

  • A contributor shall not make contributions exceeding a total of $1,200 to any one candidate.

  • A contributor shall not make contributions exceeding a total of $5000 to two or more candidates for office on the same council or local board.

Payment Methods

  • Contributions of $25 or less may be made in cash.

  • Contributions over $25 must be made by cheque, money order, electronic transfer, or another method that clearly identifies the contributor.

Disclosure

Donor information (name and address) for total contributions that exceed $100 must be included in the campaign's financial statement, which becomes a public record as required by the Municipal Elections Act.

Tax Information

Municipal campaign contributions are not tax deductible. Official receipts of funds received will be issued for donations of $100 or more.
